Our team at Nightlight Chiropractic uses several techniques to aid in our patients’ healing process. One technique that is very effective is Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES). Although this therapy has been used in sports performance, training, and even as a cosmetic tool, our chiropractic office in Downtown Orlando utilizes Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation to prevent muscle atrophy due to inactivity after an injury.
The process is very simple and works by sending a small electrical current into the affected area of soft tissue or a muscle spasm.
Unlike a TENS unit which could be purchased at a local pharmacy, a Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation machine is designed to stimulate muscles. This means that the current is set to penetrate below the surface skin and cause muscles to contract. Though the current aids in releasing endorphins (natural pain relievers) and helps reduce swelling, the goal is to cause the muscle to contract without you consciously thinking about it.
Though there had been some controversy surrounding the use of Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation use in the 1970’ s due to differing techniques, there are important differences that make the difference between effective and ineffective NMES. The most important distinction is which “programs” and “protocols” are used in which areas. This is critical as the wrong type and strength of the current in the wrong muscle tissue (or with the wrong injury) can actually make the problem worse.
The Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation programs we use at Nightlight Chiropractic are time-tested research-based protocols to use on the back and neck. The therapy relaxes the muscles and restores a more natural tone (the balance of relaxed and contracted) to affected tissues. Though some medical groups will aim to improve fatigue resistance or increase force production, we stand true to our motto, “Get you out of pain, and get you out of the office.” For those suffering from acute or chronic pain, short therapy sessions can be done and can lead to great results in pain relief.
